Some of the exhibitors today will not like what I am about to say, part and parcel of a healthy dog, whether show dog or companion, are clean teeth. I was disappointed to discover on many of the exhibits and surprisingly some of the younger ones, heavy plaque and tartar. I found examples of such in all classes and this influenced some of my placings. To neglect the cleaning of teeth can lead to early tooth loss, infection in the gums with resulting bacteria getting into the bloodstream which is known to affect the heart. In almost every case the preparation and presentation of coats was first class so I find it hard to comprehend why, for the sake of a few extra minutes, the teeth could not be prepared to the same standards. I will not single out any individual, you all know who you are and should be able to recognise dirty teeth, I would ask that more attention be paid to dentals on a regular basis. Teeth can be cared for, as some of the Veterans today can testify.

Another concern was a lack of hare feet, there were too many with cat-like feet, not the hare feet as required by the breed standard. On a more positive note, with the exception of just a couple of exhibits, coats were fabulous, single, silky and well presented, shining and glinting in the bright Borders sunlight.
