29 April 2016 – Dog World

The Papillon (Butterfly Dog) Club held their Championship show at the KC Buildings, Stoneleigh Park. The weather behaved itself which made it a lot easier manoeuvring across the stoney car park to the hall with the trolleys. As we all know the hall is large and high so noise levels resound from every corner and meet in the middle. The room allows super sized rings and plenty of grooming and trolley space available, however because the hall is so long, if you are at one end of the hall it is difficult for both the committee members and exhibitors to be in close proximity of everything going on during the day. However the committee did a grand job and worked tirelessly to ensure the day moved along smoothly.

This is a small committee and at some periods I think Brian Lees (Hon Secretary), Alan Bartram (Chairperson) and Ellie Morecai (Vice Chairperson) were doing the job of six. I believe there are vacant spaces for new committee members to join, so if this idea appeals to you and you would like to get hands on and learn what dog show preparation for the shows is all about, then have a word and get on board. It can be lots of fun.

There was a well stocked raffle and framed butterfly picture as a separate raffle. Refreshments seemed to be going down well with the exhibitors; I certainly saw plenty of chips in exhibitor’s mitts during the day!

The show had received a good entry of 227 so it was going to be a busy day ahead for both judges and stewards. For this show the dog judge was breed specialist Mrs Queenie Bruce (Tijuana) for the bitches Mrs Rosalie Brady (Bordercot). Mrs Pat Munn (Ringlands) was to be the referee and also judged the Junior Handling and Best Fringes in Show.

Queenie Bruce arrived in the ring looking elegant in a short black jacket with cerise long skirt whilst Rosalie Bradley was attired in a mint green trouser suit. The judging went smoothly along with the help of their able stewards. Open Dog and Open Bitch were judged after the dinner break.

For the dogs the DCC went to Irene & Glenn Robb’s Ch Gleniren Shootin Starmaker Sunshoo and the RDCC Joe Magri & Kevin Arrowsmith’s Ch Rozamie Dream Lover. For the bitches the BCC / BOS went to Alexandra Forth’s Ch Omegaville Make Me A Petitchien and the RBCC Cathy & Gordon Urquhart’s Queen Bless Winner of Art Eroile at Blackpark (Imp Jpn). For deciding BIS Pat Munn was called as the referee and awarded BIS to the dog CH G Shootin Starmaker Sunshoo. The dog CH R Dream Lover was then awarded RSBIS. BP went to Mary Whitehill with Graycaz Chill Your Boots, BV Jenny Scovell’s Ch Frasermar Icicle at Caswell, BPH Jo Davidson-Poston & Karen Farrell’s: Multi Ch Magnolise Tiago for Spinillons ShCM CW14 PPVN15 (Imp USA) who also took Best Fringes. Best Junior Handler with Pat Munn judging went to Caragh Mcgrath and the 6-11 yrs was won by Issac Magri-Arrowsmith.

During the dinner break we had a lovely puppy walk of ten puppies, puppies are always so entertaining and it is so nice to see them taking their first steps in the show ring. There was also a Champions Parade with champions from past and present.
Jill Terry with her husband Ian were presented with a signed card from the exhibitors and committee wishing them well as they are to soon to settle in sunnier climes. They also received a scrumptious looking box of chocolates. The card was expertly made by Valerie Lockhart. I hope the move goes well Jill and you enjoy your new abode to the max.

The annual awards for the Parent Club were presented and a certificates given by the President Miss Ann Summerfield. Top Papillon (The Ringlands Trophy) Irene & Glenn Robb’s Ch Gleniren Shootin Starmaker Sunshoo, Travis also took the Top Dog (The Shimna Trophy) and Top CH Show Winner (The Graycaz Trophy). Top Bitch (The Elendil Trophy) Robb’s Ch Gleniren Kiss Me Kate Sunshoo. Top Puppy (The Kuruso Trophy) was shared three ways, Tom Isherwood & De Silva’s Afterglow Mouseketeer, Lynda Woodrow’s Lynflyer Winter Sparkle and Mrs Gregory’s Skyvana Reddy To Go to Tonkory. Best Veteran (The Jan Roosens Trophy) two exhibitors shared this Sandra Austin & Jane Thompson’s Jhanakai Highland Destiny and Alison Atkins Papplewick Petroglyph. Top Stud Dog (The Miss Taylor Stud Dog & The Charthamcoombe Tristan Trophy) Robb’s Ch Gleniren Nikolia Mania Sunshoo, Top Brood Bitch (The GreenhedgesTrophy and the Brood Bitch & Progeny Cup) Robb’s Ch Gleniren Juniper Starmaker Sunshoo. Top Owner (The Monamie Trophy) Gleniren, Top Breeder (The Joan Brown Rose Bowl Trophy) Gleniren.

During this break the Parent Club presented Travis (Ch G Shootin Starmaker Sunshoo) with a special award for achieving Top Dog All Breeds 2015. The most beautiful rosette and sash, and a perfect crystal trophy with a shootin star. It will be treasured always. Glenn was away so it was just myself and have to admit being quite overwhelmed and grateful to the club to have thought to do this. It was a special moment not just for Travis but for our lovely breed the Papillon.
Carolyn and I had taken a cake with the words ‘Travis says thank you’ and wine. Just our way of saying a huge thank you for the wonderful support, cheerleading and congratulations on Travis’s journey so far. Your support means the world to us.

During the lunch break the Papillon Junior Awards were presented. Karen Maskell is the administrator for the awards and it is a big day for the juniors. The results were as follows; 6 to 11 years 1st Holly Bradford, 2nd Cerys Osbourne, 3rd Bethany Osbourne. 12 to 16 years 1st Caragh McGrath, 2nd Rachel Dutton, 3rd Callum Thornton. The most improved hander was Issac Magi-Arrowsmith. Karen would like to say a huge thank you to the Papillon Club of Scotland for their very kind donation of the money that has been raised from their recent seminar to the Junior Handling Awards. It’s very nice to see a club get on board and help our juniors. We all need to realise that the juniors are the future of this breed and hopefully other clubs will also come on board and support them.
The juniors received their trophies, plus many gifts. Everyone went away with something, they have all given of their best and this is the way it should be. The awards are very dear to my heart as I formed this originally and I want to see it go from success to success.
